If anybody mentions “pizza” to you, you would automatically think about Pizza Margherita!
This variant, the most famous in the world, made with the basic ingredients of tomato, mozzarella and basil was created in Naples in 1889 by Pizza Chef Raffaele Esposito.
Legend has it that Raffaele Esposito was invited to an event in the presence of Queen Margherita of Savoy. Mr. Esposito decided to pay homage to Her Majesty with three varieties of pizza. The pizzas arrived in a decorated cart pulled by a mule but the one featuring the colours of the new Italian flag, (basil for green, mozzarella for white and tomato for red) was particularly appreciated by the Queen, therefore Raffaele decided to baptize this variety as “Pizza Margherita”.
From that moment the Pizza Margherita become one of the most loved ones of the Neapolitan pizza tradition!
Raffaele Esposito, pizza chef and owner of the historic Brandi Pizzeria, jealously guarded this tradition along with relics of documents that remind us of how the pizza Margherita began this wonderful story. Pizzeria Brandi is still open and is located in the heart of Naples.
And that is the story of the Pizza Margherita…
